Learn to do a high-quality van conversion without having to redo things, return items, and make costly mistakes (that you may just have to live with).

What will I learn?

What to expect at CVCC Live 2018

  • See a comparison of the ProMaster, Transit, Sprinter, and  others. Learn which one will fit your needs best (if you already have your van, that's okay too).
  • Learn the order of steps your van conversion should be completed in so you don't have to go back and remove layers because something got left out.
  • See a variety of standard van floor plans and learn which one is the best fit for your needs.
  • Learn how to plan your ventilation strategy including how to know if you need an air conditioner and how to fit everything on your roof.
  • Learn the best (and worst) solar panels to choose and how to mount them without pulling your hair out (this is a major hurdle that discourages people at the beginning of the project, learn what to do so you can knock this out in an afternoon and have it done correctly).
  • Learn how shore power (a.k.a. plugging in your van) and charging off of the alternator can work in tandem with solar, or even without it.
  • Learn the pros and cons of lead-acid versus lithium batteries, and what the actual systems look like side-by-side at the workshop (not just pictures, but actual systems will be at the workshop so you can walk up and ask questions).
  • See cabinetry mockups and learn the construction techniques and hardware used by professional van shops (hint: these aren't items found at your local hardware store)!
  • See a complete, operational water system in-person so you can learn which major components you need, and how they fit together.
  • Learn how to safely install a propane system to run multiple items and give you years of extensive use in off-grid situations.
  • Learn about heating systems, from budget-friendly to top-of-the-line, as well as the tricks needed to install a built-in system on Sprinters, Transits, ProMasters and others.
  • Learn how to plan your insulation strategy, including the 4 major types Ross uses, where to put them, and how to know which ones you need.
  • And more...

Frequently Asked Questions

Definitely! There will be featured vans outside the venue that will be open for tours, and you'll also have a chance to show off your van and discuss your ideas with the other attendees.

Overnight parking is available at the venue (please be respectful though, it's not an official campground).

Yes. There will be Q&A time for each of the major topics covered, as well as breaks throughout the event where you can get your specific questions answered.

While this workshop shares the structure and many of the details of the Cargo Van Conversion Course online training, the workshop will be more interactive with Q&A sessions and product demonstrations, as well as a chance to meet and hang out with others in the vanlife community.

Doors open at 3pm on Friday the 12th, with an opening talk and training session at 5pm. Topics covered during this short evening session will be:

  • Van Brand Comparison
  • Van Design
  • The Beginning of the Construction Process (including a live solar panel installation demo).

Saturday is a full day of construction demos and interactive teaching.

Sunday will be a short session from 9am (doors open at 8:30) until noon.

You can get in touch with Ross Lukeman via email at [email protected] or call 713-816-3476.

This workshop will feature the latest and greatest in van components and technology, and give you the clarity and training to pull off a high-quality van conversion without a bunch of mistakes or design flaws. It is the only training of its kind in the U.S. (or probably the world) at this time. If you put in the effort to make it to Austin, it's going to make your project that much easier later on.

It may happen in the future, but at this time there are no fixed plans to offer this workshop at a later time in another place.
